Day 1: Arequipa Countryside Highlights

  • Depart from your hotel in Arequipa to start exploring the surrounding districts.
  • Visit the Mirador de Carmen Alto in Cayma for breathtaking views of the Arequipa valley, Chili River, and the three volcanoes that frame the city.
  • Continue to the district of Yanahuara to see its charming lookout and church built of white volcanic stone (sillar) in the mestizo baroque style.
  • Pass by the historic Iron Bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel, heading to the Mirador de Sachaca, the highest viewpoint in the city with expansive views of the countryside.
  • Tour the Founder’s Mansion (La Mansión del Fundador), once home to the son of Arequipa’s founder and later used as a Chilean military headquarters during the war.
  • Explore the village of Sabandia to see its Colonial-era Water Mill, once used to grind grain, and then head to Paucarpata to admire its pre-Inca terraces and andenerías.
  • Conclude your tour with a stroll through Arequipa’s historic Plaza de Armas.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Arequipa & Surroundings

We begin by picking you up from your hotel to start our adventure into the Arequipa countryside. Our first stop is the district of Cayma, where we visit the Carmen Alto viewpoint, offering panoramic views of the lush Arequipa valley, the Chili River, and the imposing volcanoes Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu.

Next, we travel to Yanahuara, famous for its beautiful lookout constructed from white volcanic stone and its mestizo baroque-style church. We then drive across the Iron Bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel, leading us to Sachaca, the highest viewpoint in the city, from where you can marvel at the vast expanse of Arequipa’s countryside.
