Day 1: Toro Muerto & Querulpa Adventure
- Pick-up from your hotel in Arequipa in the morning.
- Travel approximately 3 hours by tourist transport to reach Toro Muerto.
- Guided exploration of Toro Muerto, a vast field of volcanic rocks covered with fascinating petroglyphs depicting animals, humans, and symbolic figures.
- Continue to Querulpa to see authentic dinosaur footprints; enjoy a short 10-minute walk to observe these remarkable prehistoric traces.
- Head to the town of Corire to enjoy a typical local lunch featuring delicious shrimp dishes (not included).
- Visit nearby vineyards and learn about the production process of Peru’s famous wine and pisco.
- Return to Arequipa in the late afternoon.
Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Rock Art, Dinosaurs & Vineyards
We start by picking you up from your hotel in Arequipa and travel for about 3 hours to reach the spectacular site of Toro Muerto. Here, your guide will lead you through a landscape scattered with nearly 5,000 volcanic stones, each etched with petroglyphs of birds, mammals, reptiles, frogs, fish, dancers, warriors, and mysterious mythological figures — offering a glimpse into the life and beliefs of ancient civilizations.
Next, we visit Querulpa, a unique site where you’ll follow a short trail to see genuine dinosaur footprints preserved in the rock — a rare and fascinating connection to the Jurassic era. Afterward, we drive to Corire, a charming town where you can enjoy lunch based on local shrimp specialties (lunch not included).
To end the day, we stop at local vineyards to learn about traditional methods of making wine and pisco. Finally, we return to the city of Arequipa, arriving with unforgettable memories of Peru’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
